5 Underrated Features of a Good Kids' Headphone

What you really want to know before you buy

As a parent, you want one thing above all: for your child to listen safely and comfortably. And while many kids' headphones look great, the real differences lie in things you don't immediately see, but which are decisive for hearing safety, comfort, and ease of use.

We list 5 features that are often underestimated, but are essential when choosing children's headphones.

1. Volume limiting, but really well-regulated

Many parents now know that 85-93 decibels is the safe limit for children. But what many people don't realize is that not all headphones with a volume limiter actually achieve this .

🎯 Tip: Test it at home with your own ears. If it sounds "normally loud," it's probably too loud for children.

2. Fit and weight, especially for children's heads

An adult headset on a child's head is like a helmet that is too big: it doesn't fit properly.

Important criteria:

  • Lightweight design, max. 200 grams is ideal

  • Adjustable headband for small heads

  • Soft, breathable ear cushions that do not pinch

  • On-ear or over-ear? Over-ear offers better sound isolation.

Tip: Let your child try on the headphones if they want to keep them on unnoticed, then you're good to go.

3. Durability Can it withstand a blow?

Children's hands are curious, playful, and… not always careful. A good pair of kids' headphones should be able to withstand a few knocks. Literally.

What you want to pay attention to:

  • Flexible headband that does not break easily

  • Reinforced cables or a wireless model with sturdy hinges

  • Easy-to-clean ear cushions

🎯 Tip: All our models are kid-proof and made of shock-resistant materials. They last much longer.

4. Wired or wireless, which is safer?

Both options have pros and cons, but for young children safety and ease of use are important:

Wired

+ No battery stress
+ DualShare function for listening together
+ Removable cable or reinforced cable
+ Built-in microphone
+ Soft ear cushions

– Risk of cable breakage or tripping
– Cord restricts freedom of movement
- An audio pin that breaks off in the source device (our headphones are not affected by this)

Wireless (Bluetooth)

+ No hassle with cords
+ Battery display in the source device
+ DualShare function for listening together
+ More freedom to move
+ Built-in microphone
+ Bluetooth version
+ Soft ear cushions
+ Optional: active noise canceling

– Charging the battery is necessary
– Not every model has a secure Bluetooth connection

🎯 Tip: For children under 6, wired is often safest. From 6–7 years old, wireless is fine, provided the volume is limited.

5. Battery life or charging time underestimates convenience

Nothing's more frustrating than dead headphones just as the journey begins. And even though children don't listen for hours at a time, it's nice to have headphones ready when you need them.

Important:

  • Minimum battery life: 35 o'clock

  • Fast charging function (e.g. 10 min charging = 1 hour playtime)

  • LED indicator for battery status

🎯 Tip: Our wireless kids' headphones have a USB-C port. They charge faster and are future-proof.

🎯 Smart buying tips per age category

👶 3–5 years
– Lightweight, wired, sturdy design
– Small headband, soft fit
– Durable + easy to operate

🧒 6–9 years
– Wireless or hybrid model (with cable option)
– Better battery, still with limitation
– Durable and easy to keep clean

🧑 10–12 years
– More autonomy: wireless, with controls on the shell
- Pay attention to correct fit and safe maximum volume
– Could look a bit more 'adult', but still child-safe

Finally, it's about more than just sound

Kids' headphones aren't toys. They're an everyday item that impacts your child's hearing, learning process, and listening enjoyment. Make a conscious choice for kids' headphones that will last for years.
